T
hese are the questions we are gonna discuss here from a Music Television (MTV) commissioned study. It reveals various interesting facts regarding the views and life-styles of young Indians. The study analyses the values, attitudes, life-styles, music and MTV-related preference of young Indians. Read through to see if what these guys have found is right. After all, they are talking about you and who else. The study tries to understand the psycho of young Indians - their attitudes to parents, friends, marriage, life, the media, brands, entertainment, television, music and their icons. The quantitative study, conducted by IMRB, covered respondents from the cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Kanpur, and L ucknow between 15 and 34 years of age. Using the methodology of random sampling, the study covered a sample size of 2,745 respondents from households with cable and satellite availability and the ability to view any of the available music channels. The salient features of the survey indicate that pre-marital sex is far from being a way of life for the young Indians in the '90s. Living in relationships are unacceptable to them and "we will marry out of our own choice" is the common refrain. The youth are of the view that parents are always the fall-back, considering them to be not merely "providers" but also their friends, guides and philosophers. They would prefer to obey their parents even if it hurts them. Alongside parents, friends are the prime advisors of today's youth. "Friends are the centre of all my activities," is the motto of the day. This is referred to as "Friend centrism". Understandably, mere 15-24 years old than 25-35 years old of the respondents view life as being "Friendcentric". According to the survey, as much as 70.66 per cent of the respondents in Bangalore, Chennai Kanpur, Mumbai and Delhi say that pre-marital sex is unacceptable, while only 29.33 per cent say that it is acceptable. More males than females support the idea. The youth of Mumbai, in keeping with its liberal and 'individualistic' image, were the most supportive of the idea. On the other hand, Chennai, the city identified with conservativeness, was most opposed.
