Web Careers

Database Administrator
Here’s all the responsibility you could ever ask for - keeping the databases well tuned and secure. ‘Piece of cake’, you say?? Not this time fellows - especially not when the database keeps track of important info like customer’s records, their passwords, credit card numbers etc. etc. You’ll design the database, link them with programs, maintain and update them online and of course, take backups too (mind you !  this can get very boring after some time!).

What you need to have is an understanding of as many databases as possible (along with their respective operating systems). As soon as a new version hits the market (quick change is the name of the game!), you are expected to upgrade your database. Database management is something a Webmaster can do too if the work is not too heavy.

What is most important to get in, is hands-on working experience on projects using databases. On the other hand, there are dot coms that look for MCA’s or people who’ve done long term courses (2-3 years). You don’t need a lot of intelligence to know that the former proves stronger in the long run. However, you would benefit from a 1-2 year course with special emphasis on Oracle. If you can learn about other databases too - nothing like it!

Get some experience in the industry and you can bag 8-10 grand for starts. In a year’s time 20 grand will be yours to claim. Two to three years down the line, and a Webmaster is what you can be.

Memo

Get ready! To be in-demand, maintain secure databases, work till the wee hours in the morning, exercise your designing skills...
