Statistics

Statistics has also been known as political arithmetic because it is the science of organizing & manipulating data( lots of graphs, charts... - get my drift?). Obviously - the subject is interdisciplinary in
nature. Almost every subject, ranging from Psychology to Maths requires the use of statistics(immense demand).

Indian Statistical Institute of Calcutta is a pioneer institution working in this field. The activities of the institution are spread over a wide area of the country. A network of service units in statistical QualityControl covers the major cities of India with a

Most colleges which offer a graduation degree in Statistics require a 10+2 with Maths (all you number buffs - get cracking!!) For those wanting to do Postgraduation, the eligibility condition is usually a B.Sc. degree. There are several universities offering diploma courses in Statistics for all those who aim a little higher in life.

If success in this field is what you desire, you had better have an aptitude for - I repeat - Maths!( and NO!! it doesn’t get any simpler!). You should enjoy working with figures(mathematical "figures" only!!).You will have to be able to think abstractly as well as concretely(don’t ask me how...).

Besides this, a person must be endowed with at least average intelligence & initiative(c,mon that’s not asking for much ,is it?); be patient & perseverant(r’ber - slow and steady...) and combine
with it a fair amount of accuracy and intellectual curiosity to be a statistician (why?how?when?what?huh?). If this is not enough, you must be able to communicate intelligibly with the people from varying disciplines & should have a broad basic background in the physical & social sciences if you aim to become more than a technician in a narrow specialty(of course you do!).

Data on population, production etc. have always been compiled for better economic planning. The need for statistical application is felt even more now.
Memo Never fear all you budding statisticians - as long as our population rises, your jobs remain secure!!!
