Jewellery Designing

What started as an investment years ago - is a booming business today!!
Jewellery for all occasions - passed on and gifted from generation to generation.

Today the word jewellery is not restricted to a few precious metals and gemstones. Though it is still a woman’s alter ego and a man’s best friend (to woo women, silly!), designers and makers of jewellery have kept up with the times. The palette is larger, and instead of metals; plastic, paper, mud etc. are being used innovatively. Contemporary jewellery and a fusion of the traditional and contemporary styles are much in vogue. Electronic jewellery is the latest trend in the market right now. (what more could you ask for!!)

Did you know? India is the largest consumer of gold and also has an excellent diamond-cutting infrastructure. Our jewellery market is overflowing. With the intervention of branded international jewellery in our home market, jewellery making has become a very competitive and specialized business. The good news is, all the competition has made it all the more affordable than before!

Training till date is done in the traditional way, and there is a dearth of trained personnel who can bridge the gap between the artisans and the market. We have the potential to compete by making jewellery in line with today’s needs and upto international standards. The sad story is that there are not enough training institutes for hopeful candidates. NIFT, JD Institute of Fashion Technology and JPDC in Delhi and Jasani Institute in Mumbai among others are the select few. The duration of the courses offered is generally 3 months to 2 - 2 ½ years.

Most institutes would take in a X grader or a XII grader for short-term courses, while some may ask for a fine arts degree for specialized courses. Then, there are those institutes that will not quit till they have judged your aptitude and intelligence. (thru’ tests, of course!!)

Diversification in this field is very common because wide spectra of jobs are available. You could choose to be a grader or sorter of diamonds and other precious/semi-precious stones or a trader in stones. Apart from actually designing jewellery, you could be a jewellery evaluator, a writer for magazines, a salesperson (you have to start somewhere!), stone cutter, jewellery teacher, dealer in jewellery tools and machines or an exhibitor, etc (I can still go on...) jew3.gif (2008 bytes)

The opportunities are limitless, depending upon your skill and aptitude (of course, you knew that!!).Institutes provide placements too, but if you are the DIY kinds you could start your own workshop (not very easy!!). If you have lots of contacts, lots of clients and pots of money - should be a piece of cake then!! You can then have your own brand name - an exquisite range of jewellery - all yours - starting from designing, to giving shape to the metal, to selling the finished piece!
Jewellery designing requires you to be creative (but of course!) with a flair for fashion. An open mind is what you should possess - for the safe passage of ideas and forms - to and fro!! A successful jewellery maker or designer is one who understands his/her client’s lifestyle, preferences, culture, work pattern and of course the amount of "money" he/she is willing to spend. You will have to calculate the trends and hit the market with the right range of jewellery, at the right time! (only then can you hope to sell!). jew4.gif (561 bytes)
A comfortable and lavish lifestyle is what you can expect (once you have made a mark!!). Lots of social hobnobbing with the elite and the wealthy lot - if you play your cards right!!

You can now descend onto mother earth coz reality is about to strike you -
Money and fame are out of the question when you are just a beginner (they will come when they have to!). Before that your precious sweat will have to flow (in large quantities!!)

Memo If you can predict and deliver - "glittering" shall be yours!!
