Groan!
I have gained 5 kgs . Now I have to go on a diet
Familiar
words, are they? There are so many of us who suffer
from the weight-gain problem and in some cases,
simply the fear of gaining weight. And we rush
into diets which may not be the ideal solution
to our problem. So, what to do ???

Enter the dietician
A dietitian applies the scientific principles of nutrition
to the preparation of different kinds of food for people
enjoying good health and for those suffering from disease.
He/ She works out the ideal mix of food that you need
to intake for the correct balance of proteins, vitamins,
and other requirements of your body and while overcoming
the problem that you are suffering from.
Ever wondered who decides the menu in a hospital? It is
the dietician who plans menus and devises special recipes
for patients. He also has to keep in touch with the patients
and explains their diets to them. The right food to the
right person and at the right time whew, it's a
tall order indeed!
A dietician is also much in demand in the processed food
industry where he may work on the development and improvement
of food products and production methods. He can also be
in charge of catering in organizations of different types
such as residential schools, offices etc. (health is wealth,
remember!). And of course, there are weight-reduction
clinics mushrooming all over the country and they
definitely need trained dieticians. Freelancing is also
lucrative as people are getting more and more health conscious
and want guidance on proper diet.
To be a dietitian you need to have interest in sound diet,
understanding of people of all ages (grand parents as
well as children!) and temperaments and tastes. You need
to know the ins and outs of all types of food (not only
the taste and colour but the components too). You also
need to understand the different types of diseases and
the food which can help overcome these diseases.
Dietetics can be studied once you obtain a graduate degree
in home science, medicine, science (with chemistry, microbiology),
hotel management and catering. Dietetics is taught as
a post graduate diploma course in some institutes and
universities such as
SNDT Womens' University, Mumbai
Nirmala Niketan, Mumbai
All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health (under
Calcutta University), Calcutta
Institute of Home Economics, Delhi
Sophia College, B.K. Somani Polytechnic, Mumbai
Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Applied Nutrition,
Mumbai
Many universities such as those of Delhi , Mumbai and
Chennai offer health and nutrition as subjects at the
graduate level too .
So, go
ahead, be a dietitian and show your interest in food yummmm. |
