Compering

"Ladies and gentlemen - it gives me great pleasure to welcome all you beautiful people to the Femina Miss...!!" There she stands, the compere of the show - articulate and witty!!

Forgive me if I made it seem female dominated - men are in equal demand!

The social calendar is always full. And event management has suddenly become a hot business to get into. The reasons are not difficult to see - MNC’s invading the country in a big way, new television channels every second day (Hail, Satellite TV!!), the ever-increasing need for brand promotion, a fashion show here - a charity event there...

Reasons enough I guess, to make compering a lucrative profession??

Time to find out what it takes to be up there - recognised and admired by millions -
Good news for all those who think academics is a waste of time. This profession requires no specific qualifications. However, both you and I know how important education is - to acquire even the gift of the gab. You need not be a complete extrovert (most of them are usually a pain - you know where!!). What you do need is a pleasing personality and an incredible sense of humour. You cannot afford to stay aloof. Cultivate (if you have to)

the desire to interact with and understand people. Since you will deal with all the sections of society, you should have a broad mind and a flexible way of thinking. . Remember - live promotions have no retakes - Once you’re out there (all alone!) - it’s up to you to deliver!

As always, some bad news should follow the good! Life will never be a bed of roses - innumerable problems will crop up when you are on stage - the lights will focus on everything but you, the microphone will give in, schedules may go haywire and above all - the audience may stop reacting to your jokes (this doesn’t mean you get off stage and bash up the poor fellows!!). Behave like a mature individual - remain calm and composed ( so what, if you miraculously discover the use of abuses??). Patience is the name of the game - improvise without batting an eyelid and prove your worth!

If you did not already know - let me enlighten you with one important fact! The weak and the faint-hearted had better stay miles away from this profession. Stamina is what you require (and that too in abundance!). This profession is equally famous for its long days and nights. Forget all the time limits and be prepared for lots of physical work.

You will be able to enhance your performance if you are well read and topical. Your audience will range from CEO’s to Bimla Mausi, and you will have to cater to all their needs (good luck pal!)

It’s time to be happy again - we’re going to talk MONEY!
Of course! You know this profession pays well. Allow me to elaborate - one day’s hard work can get you anything between 500 - 10,000 bucks (amazed, are we?)

Try hard not to look into the money factor (I know it’s hopeless but do try!). A good compere works from his heart, not his mind.

Always remember - glamour and fame come with a price. You can never be sure of permanency. The field is flooded with competitors - young and old , amateurs and professionals - each wanting to be more famous! But if you have genuine talent - the sky is your limit!

mike.gif (2509 bytes) If you’ve had enough learning for the day - let’s get down to the basics - like, how should you go about this whole thing??

First things first - gather your creative mind together and make yourself a CV. Make it a point to mention all the plays, debates and compering shows you have done in school or college (brag a little if you feel like - no prizes for guessing who’ll face the music eventually!). And now for some more words of wisdom! Let’s assume you land the job
- do not charge the poor company a whole lot of money (very unethical!).

Proceed step by step - showcase your talent, get approved and raise your fee (of course you knew that!)

Memo Satisfaction is what this career guarantees for people who are creative with a great sense of humour. Hundreds of people hang on to every word you say, laugh uncontrollably at the jokes you crack , and finally reward you with thunderous applause... can there be a greater high??
