The job of an air hostess or a flight purser (male counterpart of an air hostess) seems very glamorous, but (there is always a 'but') they usually fly 75-85 hours a month and spend 75-85 hours a month on the ground preparing planes for the flight, debriefing following completed flights and waiting for late arriving planes.

Attendants stand during the flight, greet, help & serve the passengers on board, smile and stay calm when they are about to fall, try and make the journey comfortable for some irate passenger (even though they would have loved to knock his teeth out!!)

Working at odd hours, always staying alert for emergencies and handling a variety of people, day in and day out , is a demanding job - both physical and emotional.

Now that you are apprehensive - it's time to reveal the good stuff (they are quite a few, I promise) If you are a travel freak - your dream finally comes true! You'll get paid anywhere around 20,000 bucks and more with the national carriers, and believe it or not, the International Airlines pay almost upto 3 times the above stated amount. Besides attractive perks and allowances, cabin crew are also entitled to free/concessional air passage for dependents.

ccrew4.gif (1099 bytes) But let this not blind you, my dear friend - this job is yours, only if responsibility, confidence, tact, physical stamina, sociability, team spirit and excellent communication skills are your strong points.

Besides this, there are specific physical requirements for this job which have to be met -
Air Hostess - 157.5cm (min. height)
Flight Purser - 163cm (min. height)
Proportional weight with normal eyesight is desirable or a minimum of uncorrected distant vision of 6.4 is acceptable.

The national and some private air carriers recruit graduates within the age of 19-25 as air hostesses/flight pursers. Preference is given to candidates with a degree in Hotel Management/Tourism. Moreover, proficiency in English, Hindi, a regional and a foreign language is desirable (time to exercise your tongue??).

International Airlines, on the other hand, recruit air hostesses within the age group of 18-35. The recruitment of flight pursers from India by International Airlines is a recent trend (good news for the Indian male!!). Some foreign airlines put down previous customer service experience or fluency in the language of the region in which the airline operates, as essential prerequisites for the job.

You will be selected either through an appearance or a written test followed by an interview, in response to the advertisement in the newspapers.

Indian Airlines imparts Cabin Crew training in Hyderabad, and Air India in Mumbai where tips on etiquette, skin care , personality development, accident rescue, first aid etc. are given.

Colleges for air hostess training have spread far and wide. Private institutes conduct certificate courses, both regular and postal for air hostess and flight purser training (can’t say who is genuine or fake!).

Establishing and maintaining the reputation of an airline for quality service is the responsibility of the cabin crew. The opinion of the passengers is based on the quality of service an airline provides. Each day, new people will provide a fresh challenge. Each passenger will demand value for his money.

Memo You will have to make the journey memorable for the guests on board - so get up on your toes and flash that sparkling smile!!
