COMMERCIAL ART

Are you bursting with the desire to unleash your creativity, come up with new ideas on every new project, make designs and art forms...???
 ENTER Commercial Art...
Yet another diversification of the good ol’ arts!
So, what exactly do these ‘commercial artists’ do?
Of course, you have seen attractive illustrations in advertisements, displays, books, book jackets, magazines, posters, packaging etc. They do all that and more...
In short, the application of various art media for commercial purposes is what commercial art is all about.
For those who think this is not enough - hold on to whatever you have near -
These arts can be extended to the industrial field to incorporate exhibitions and window displays, hoarding, cinema slides, technical catalogues etc ...

Tired with snippets?? Let’s indulge in a little detail!!

Since training artists in the planning and execution of advertising and publicity is what commercial art is concerned with - its 2 main areas are Design and Graphics.

Artists work for themselves - designers do not! They have to constantly keep in mind the technological and commercial requirements and hence have to work with a team of experts from various disciplines (all this to ensure feasibility and cost effectiveness!). A designer is supposed to possess not only artistic talent, but also sufficient technical and business knowledge. Only then will he be able to appreciate the requirements of an industry (a lot is at stake at all times!).

Graphics, on the other hand, is concerned with lettering, illustration including photography, designing symbols and logos etc. And that’s not all - visual aids for educational and industrial applications, TV graphics, programme titles, captions, election results, trade figures etc. are included in this sector too. Can you ever think of graphics without computers?? (No? Neither can I!). Hence we have CAD (Computer Aided Design) systems being used extensively.

For those who are keen to join the course - keep this in mind. The duration of the certificate diploma courses varies between 1-5 years at various training schools and colleges. If you have passed 10+2 and wish to do the 4-year course in commercial art, the Delhi College of Art and JJ School of Art will be glad to accommodate you. An entrance test is all you have to clear (of course you can do that!)

For a career such as commercial art, do I need to tell you what attributes you should possess?? Well anyway - if you have been praised for your creativity, your artistic and imaginative mind - try your luck here! As for those who haven’t been blessed with the artistic force - don’t give in! Believe in hard work ‘coz a little formal training can make your latent artistic talent bloom. This is not all - so if you are already sighing with relief - you’re in for a big surprise!

Analyzing problems and coming up with solutions, thinking clearly and logically, will be your daily jobs. Of course, you will require drawing skills to express your ideas in a three dimensional way. A sense of colour, appreciation of aesthetics, sensitivity to ergonomics and numerical ability to calculate dimensions are little things that should always stay at the back of your mind!

Besides all this, you have to communicate; you need to persuade; work in a team and be original (or at least try to!). If you are satisfied with all this, we’ll save the rest for later!

It’s time now to talk about the best part - Employment! The following list states all the areas you can find jobs in:

  • Advertising
  • Publishing and Printing
  • TV , Video and Film Companies
  • Publicity materials (like brochures etc..)
  • Illustration
  • Photography

As we come to the end, it’s time to make you very happy. Let’s talk about the green stuff!! If you happen to be a designer from one of the premier institutes - say, National School of Design - Ahmedabad, get ready to pocket anything between 15,000-50,000 bucks per month (control the drool - it all depends on the assignment, of course!). If designing magazine covers catches your fancy, you can start with 3,000-4,000 bucks per month. The senior level can hope to get 10,000-11,000 per month.

For those of you who think 9-5 jobs are a pain - try freelancing - a very smart choice that has caught on in full swing! Freelance artists can be paid anything between Rs. 2,500 to 15,000.

Let’s not forget - market trends are moving towards modernisation, and there is sure to be an increasing demand for trained professionals (make sure you grab this opportunity!). Modernisation apart, as long as advertising, journalism and electronic communication live and grow (which they surely will!!), the job of a commercial artist stays very secure.

So what are you waiting for !?! Just let the creative juices flow.....
